This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because bobcats are elusive nocturnal animals that are rarely spotted in daylight. The odds for an amateur to capture this magnificent display of wild cat agility and strength are one in a billion. Many professional wildlife filmmakers would be envious, whether they're fans of bobcats or any wild cat or not.
This cat's impressive accomplishment was captured on video in Pecan Island, Louisiana. The cat first prepared for the jump and then reached the far-away bank in a single move. And it poses a question: Was it a jump, or a flight?
Cats are truly amazing, and we tend to forget it, no matter the size of the cat or the cat species. Luckily, we have videos like this to remind us.
This video has left people speechless
Laurel Serieys, a wildlife biologist at the University of Cape Town, says that “bobcats can easily jump several meters,” and it’s not uncommon for even smaller cats to do it.
In the case in question, “the bobcat is trying to avoid getting wet, and given what agile, athletic animals they are, jumping across the bridge is not too difficult,” Laurel said. Maybe she was even stalking some prey. “We’ve seen bobcats hunting near water for waterfowl, so perhaps it was hunting nearby and trying to get from one side of the water to the other.”
But larger cats can make leaps much longer than this without too much sweat. Laurel stated that “if they are jumping across something, their leap can reach 6 meters.”
