Yep, around 11 percent of unhatched turtle babies can communicate through their shells. They hatch a plan (pun intended) so that they can all emerge simultaneously, which increases their chances of survival.
When the babies are ready to hatch, they use a tool called a caruncle or an "egg tooth" to help them break through their shells. The egg tooth then falls out only an hour later.
Sadly, only about one in a thousand baby turtles will survive after hatching. The odds are heavily stacked against them because they must rely solely on their own strength and instincts.
A mother turtle will lay around 150 to 200 eggs at one time, which she then covers with sand before returning to the ocean. So, essentially, baby turtles are abandoned by their parents.
