High School Had An "Adulting Day" Where They Taught Kids Useful Life Skills
Teaching kids more than just complex algebra is essential to giving them the best start in life

High school taught us a lot of things; such as how to pass standardised tests, how to memorise dates, and how to use formulas to solve problems about strange people who decided to buy eighty watermelons. Obviously, some of those things are more useful than others. But in the years since my high school graduation, as I've made my way out into the adult world, I have often wished that I had been taught more useful life skills.
I mean, what help is Pythagoras going to be if I'm in jail for accidentally paying my taxes wrong? Bullett Central High School in Shepherdsville, Kentucky had a similar idea. They recently started an "Adulting Conference" to teach their senior students some valuable life skills.
The "Adulting Conference" allowed the students to learn skills that would help them once they left high school. The students learnt things such as basic cooking, how to pay bills, credit cards and other financial skills, how to change a tire and how to behave during a traffic stop.
The students listened to guest speakers brought in by the BCHS Family Resource & Use Services Centre to teach the students the essential skills they will need once in the adult world.
This is a brilliant idea and I sincerely hope it catches on elsewhere!
