Surgical Mix-Up: Dad's Gallbladder Surgery Turns Into Vasectomy

When a routine visit to the hospital for gallbladder surgery ended with an unexpected vasectomy, one family found themselves in the midst of a medical mix-up that left them shocked and bewildered.

This man experienced an unprecedented turn of events when he allegedly emerged from gallbladder surgery with an unexpected vasectomy. Jorge Base, aged 41, expressed his fury, claiming that doctors at Florencio Diaz Hospital in Cordoba, Argentina, made a colossal error when he was anticipating an abdominal operation.

Arriving at the state-run health facility last Wednesday, Base intended to undergo the removal of his gallbladder, a routine procedure also known as cholecystectomy. It's a common practice to remove this small pouch-like organ, which stores bile, under general anesthesia when individuals suffer from painful gallstones.

In a recent TV interview, Base expressed his frustration, saying, "I have three grown-up boys, but I was dreaming of having a girl." He went on to explain that doctors had informed him that the chances of reversing the vasectomy were minimal.

"I feel so angry and helpless," he added. "I can't understand how they made such a mistake when my medical records clearly indicated gallbladder surgery." Base shared that the solution offered by health professionals is artificial insemination if he desires to father another child.

Base's lawyer, Diego Larrey, revealed that his client's initial reaction upon waking from anesthesia was a desire to die when he realized the mistake that had occurred. "The hospital ended up performing the gallbladder operation the same day, which was the only one he should have undergone," Larrey explained. "That operation should have taken place last Tuesday and was rescheduled to the following day at 9 a.m."

"My client wasn't asked anything when he arrived at the hospital, which surprised him. They put a gown on him and took him to the operating theater," stated Base's lawyer.

"A nurse was the one who informed him of the mistake after he regained consciousness post-operation. The confusion apparently arose because the hospital does not perform gallbladder operations on Wednesdays, and he ended up on the list of people scheduled for vasectomies by mistake."
