Forcing people to reconcile when neither are ready is a terrible idea. A 36-year-old Redditor felt ambushed when he unknowingly walked into an intervention to force him to reconnect with his sister.
After their father's death, OP stopped talking to his younger sister, Jane. Jane withheld information about their father's estate.
She and their father's fiancée tried to sell the house without letting OP know. They wanted to split the profit between themselves.
OP also resented Jane's absence when their father died in hospice. She continuously gaslit him until he had to protect himself by cutting her out of his life.
Their mom, Brenda, is not a fan of the chasm that separated OP and Jane. The siblings lived with their dad after their parents divorced.
OP admitted he wasn't a perfect father. OP believed his father's parenting factored into his tumultuous relationship with Jane.
Their mom made every attempt to mend OP's and Jane's relationship. OP went to therapy and learned about establishing and enforcing boundaries.
He called out his mom whenever she tried to force him to rebuild his relationship with his sister. She threatened not to name either of them in her will until they reconnected.
OP explained how that was unfair and inappropriate. He told his mom that he didn't appreciate how she swept his feelings under the rug and invalidated his reasons for distancing himself from Jane.
Clearly, none of OP's patient explanations worked. He and his wife, along with their one-year-old, flew to visit his mom.
u/Euphoric-Exam509Half of OP's family and Jane were in his mother's living room when they walked in. They announced it was an intervention about OP's relationship with Jane.
u/Euphoric-Exam509OP looked at his wife and saw she was just as shocked as he was. OP told his family he wouldn't participate in their intervention. His mom scolded him for acting childish and refusing to make up with his sister.
u/Euphoric-Exam509OP and his family walked out with his mom trailing behind them. OP's baby cried as his mother asked him why he couldn't be an adult and just talk to his sister.
u/Euphoric-Exam509They went to a hotel and booked tickets home. OP's wife reassured him that she had nothing to do with his family's intervention. They have been calling and texting them, so OP decided to cut ties with everyone involved, save for his stepfather who was apologetic.
u/Euphoric-Exam509The intervention resulted into the opposite of what Brenda had in mind
MissSuzieSunshineShe didn't do this out of concern for her children. She wanted to be the mom who brought her kids together against their wishes.
MissSuzieSunshineJane deliberately lied to OP to make money off of their father's death. That wasn't something OP could forget and forgive easily.
Emerald_Fire_22OP's family clearly had no idea what interventions are for
dereksalemOP's lack of a relationship with his sister isn't a self-destructive habit
dereksalemOP did the right thing by walking out instead of engaging with their play-acting
Fair-boysenberry6745If they persists, OP can send them a list of his grievances against Jane to enlighten them
Echo-AzureHe made the right decision. It's best to maintain a considerable distance from a family like his.
Euphoric-Exam509OP's explanations all these years fell on deaf ears. His mother wasn't listening because she believed she knew better.
RighteousVengeanceOP's choice to go no-contact with Jane wasn't because of a childish fight. They were adults when Jane attempted to steal from their father's estate.
RighteousVengeancePeople, like OP's mom, who are used to getting their way, do not understand or respect boundaries. It's why she categorized OP's endless explanations about them as nothing but childish ramblings.
Brenda is about to learn how serious OP is with his boundaries. She can ask Jane for tips on how to deal with a family member's unwillingness to communicate.
