People with deep pockets live in a different reality than the rest of us. They spend their money on things and experiences we can't even begin to imagine.
For the most part, we are shielded from this alternate reality of theirs but thanks to this Reddit post, we got a glimpse. There is no magician behind the curtain, just another human with too many zeroes in their bank account.
This rich aunt posted on Reddit about a faux pas she committed on Christmas Day. OP admits that she married into a family richer than God.
OP spent approximately $15,000 on each of her three children and donated an equal amount to a charity of their choice. OP said she is grateful to afford such lavish gifts for her family.
Her generosity extended to her cousins and their children on Christmas. OP's family has an agreement to only give gifts to each other's children and only if they will be seeing each other that particular year.
So, OP bought her 14-year-old niece a Cartier Love Ring and a YSL purse. OP didn't think of the price at all but thought her niece would appreciate the gift since her own 14-year-old daughter was delighted to receive the very same gifts.
Besides, her niece and her daughter are close to each other & spoiling them wasn't an issue. Her niece FaceTimed her mom to excitedly show the gifts that OP gave to her.
Her niece's mom called the dad angry about OP's lavish gifts
u/richmammyShe said OP spent way more money on their daughter than they did
u/richmammyOP said she genuinely didn't think about the cost of the gifts and only thought about what a 14-year-old would enjoy
u/richmammyOP thinks her niece's mom is just mad because she thinks OP made her look bad to her daughter which was never OP's intention
u/richmammyOP's post received a ton of attention and not all of them were kind. She said everything is fine after talking to her niece's mom.
u/richmammyA few believed that OP wasn't an a**hole for her gift because it didn't come from bad intentions. They said it was a thoughtful gift any 14-year-old girl would enjoy.
Local_business_discoOP said she will be more mindful of how her gifts will be perceived by the other adults moving forward
richmammyOP's change of heart was probably encouraged by comments like this one which called her out for being out of touch
ArwenandEowynRich people are not at all like us but OP's wealth is not really up for debate
[deleted], ArwenandEowynThe top comments were calling OP an a**hole and some replies believe the hate is coming from people who are jealous of OP's money
Nickei88, Sea_Rise_1907OP's definition of what a "normal amount of money" is to spend on a 14-year-old is vastly different from the majority of us
Cleantech2020, richmammyThe more sensible commenters do think that OP's worldview is largely warped by her wealth which is what is causing this problem in the first place
theRegVelJohnsonOP's comments are very telling and it shows that her definition of what a reasonable amount of money is different from us commoners
ellewoods_007Ultimately, a majority of people think OP's gift was thoughtful if extravagant
wildflowerapricotsea, richmammyPeople had to be reminded what the Am I The A**hole sub is for
bassinlimboHoly smokes, Batman (who OP is probably neighbors with, seeing as they are all ultra-wealthy), that was a lot of money! OP admittedly is a rich person living in her own bubble, but at the same time, she is a thoughtful aunt.
She definitely made her niece happy, which was the purpose of the gift. OP promising to be more mindful of the cash she throws around moving forward is another win in our books.
