Who knew they sleep like that?
Owls are fascinating creatures. They look so noble and smart, and adorable at the same time. Lately, some photos that made us love them even more, started circling the internet. It turns out that owls taking naps are one of the cutest things in the world. It turns out that baby owls sleep with their faces down.
Who knew that they sleep that way? Journalist Mark Rees started this owl photo marathon by posting an adorable picture of an owl napping with the face down. The photo got more than 119k likes on Twitter and inspired people to share their photos of these lovely creatures.
There is no evidence for Rees' explanation that the little owls do so because their heads are too heavy, but there is no evidence against it either. One thing is sure- they really do sleep like this. The National Audubon Society, a non-profit ecological organization published a touching story about two Barred Owlets that fell from their nest. After the poor owls were returned to the tree, their saviors observed how they were recuperating.
"Keeping their talons tightly gripped on a branch, the owlets lay down on their stomachs, turned their heads to the side, and fell asleep. Their naps are short, and when they are asleep, they do not like to be awakened, even to be fed," the article wrote.
Interestingly, baby owls don't fall out of the tree while they sleep because they hold onto the branches with their back toe, the hallux. "The hallux will not open or let go until the bird bends its leg."
Unfortunately, before they can fly, many owls, due to their desire to explore the world, simply drop to the ground.
