Can parents take the hard-earned money their kids make? This is unfortunate for the young ones, but indeed their folks can.

Parents aren't breaking any laws when they take money from their children. The only way the adults can become liable is when they take money from the child's trust.

Sadly, parents have been proven to indulge in this behavior. In a 2014 poll, roughly one-half of the respondents admitted to taking money from their kids' piggy bank accounts to pay for monthly and even travel expenses.

This may sound unfair to the young ones. But since their parents work hard and earn money to raise the kids, they have a level of entitlement to the money received by their children.

The story we'll take a look at today is from the Entitled Parents subreddit. According to the original poster (OP), their mom took their paycheck only because she did their laundry one time.

After getting home, the OP's mom snatched the paycheck from them and said that she deserved it. When their dad got back home, luckily, he was on their side.

When the OP wrote the post, their mom hadn't returned their check. The dad tried to talk to their mom.

Now, he wonders how to handle the situation.

Most Redditors adviced the OP to have their own bank account to get the money deposited after receiving the check.

Another user suggested to open a secondary bank account. They need to make sure that their parents can't see how much it has.

Telling their mom that they'll get arrested would be a nice idea. But it's even better to not tell the mom at all, and just have her arrested.

The solution depends on the OP's age.

If they're at least 18 years old, they can always involve the law. If they're still a minor, shaming their mom to the relatives is probably the only option.

They also need to be careful about their money moving forward.

Maybe the employer can void the check and give the OP a new one.

But the bottom line is that the OP needs to have their own bank account.

The OP worked for X number of days to get this paycheck. Their mom only did the laundry for a day.

No matter which angle you look at, the paycheck is rightfully OP's. We just hope they find a solution and still get the money.

The OP needs to be cautious with their money from now on, especially in the mom's presence. Having a bank account wouldn't cause them headaches in the future.
