There are several pig breeds in existence, but none is as intriguing and enigmatic as the Mangalitsa. This pig grows a thick, curly coat, giving it a sheep-like appearance—but the truly fascinating aspect of this creature is its unique behavior.

Also called the "sheep-pig," the Mangalitsa has a reputation for being as tame and affectionate as a house pet. Mangalitsa breeder and importer Wilhelm Kohl provides insight into their unique behavior:

"If you treat them nicely, they'll become as tame as dogs—they'll follow you and play with you," he says.

With such distinctive characteristics, it's no wonder this creature is attracting so much attention. They're absolutely adorable, with an assortment of colors, making them a great choice for families wanting to add something different to their farm or homestead.

And, as though life had played some cruel cosmic joke on them, this Hungarian breed nearly met its end when its native land was experiencing communism.

After the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, animal geneticist Peter Toth made the decision to purchase the remaining Mangalitsa pigs and save them from extermination. We're truly grateful he did, as it allows us to appreciate this species in all its loving, fuzzy splendor.

Due to its endearingly fluffy look, the Mangalitsa pig has acquired the affectionate moniker "sheep pig."
