Igor and Luna are specially trained lifeguard dogs. They are members of the SICS Italian School of Rescue Dogs, a group that trains dogs to carry out nautical rescues.
These two adorable pooches are pretty busy. As long as there are reckless swimmers around, they will never be out of work, and they love helping people.
Just recently, they've saved a young swimmer who had found herself in water just when high waves appeared. Luckily, Igor and Luna were on the beach.
Their heroic action was even captured on video. The 15-year-old swimmer at a beach in Cilento had been swept by a strong current, and she couldn't get back ashore.
She'd been swept up by a strong current and was unable to make it back to shore on her own. That's when Igor and Luna, along with their trainers, sprang into action.
"Luna, the young honey-colored Labrador, managed to reach her first," SICS wrote on its Facebook page. "Together with her human teammate, they secured her [to the rescue buoy] and started the difficult return maneuver.
Meanwhile, the second team also caught up with them. The girl was able to cling directly to the mighty Igor to finally be rescued."

Igor and Luna were simply magnificent. But this isn't the first time that dogs trained in nautical rescue have made all the difference.
"The Italian School of Rescue Dogs is the largest world organization dedicated to the training of nautical rescue dogs and their handlers," SICS says. "In 25 years of activity, the SICS Canine Units have saved the lives of hundreds of people, making the association esteemed and appreciated by all the bodies that deal with safety at sea."
They’ve received Nassyria International Peace Prize 2021 for their actions that day.
Igor and Luna are quite famous and have appeared on many TV shows. The latest one was dedicated to the daring rescue they’ve performed in Capo Palinuro.

“For braving the stormy sea in Capo Palinuro and saving a 16-year-old girl last July 17”.

SICS Scuola Italiana Cani Salvataggio-TirrenoEven though we are used to seeing dogs help people in all kinds of circumstances, nautical rescue dogs are not that common. However, they are very popular on the Adriatic coast.
Roughly 300 dogs are performing this type of action on the Italian and Croatian beaches. Water rescue dogs are trained to swim to the victim, who then grabs a handle on the top of the dog's life jacket and is towed to safety.
If the swimmer is unconscious, some dogs can flip the person on their back, so their head is out of the water, grip the upper arm and bring them to shore.
