This Shelter for Homeless Animals Provides a Home for More Than 2,000 Stray Dogs
On a hill near the village of Pirogovo, a former city dump became an unlikely refuge for abandoned animals in Kyiv, Ukraine. What started as a rough patch of land has turned into a shelter that has been helping stray dogs and cats for decades.
The site, known locally as the "knacker's yard" or simply the "booth", has been operating since 1960 and is now run by the SOS Animals Society of Kyiv. Today, it cares for more than 2,000 stray dogs, along with other abandoned animals that needed somewhere to go.
That makes this shelter more than just a rescue center, it is a lifeline for animals with nowhere else to turn.
"Support the Movement for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals" is written on the gate, along with the word "Asylum" on the right.

The walls and entrances of the shelter are adorned with beautiful art.

The shelter has a surprisingly warm look for a place built on such a rough past.
