One of the reasons people are deterred from going to gyms is gymgoers who are only there to parade their bodies or/and judge other people. These people can't just work out and then go home; they have to make it all about themselves with their toxic behavior.
It seems like, nowadays, people do everything in the gym besides working out. You will see wannabe influencers documenting their workout routine, gym-rat bros spending most of the time admiring their physique in the mirror or sharing "advice" with people who never asked for it, etc.
These people are the reason why people feel weird about going to the gym and prefer working out elsewhere or not at all. Advice from other gymgoers is always welcome, but people tend to take it too far and keep pushing despite you never ask for any of it.
These self-proclaimed trainers can't wait to share their knowledge with you, but they are not always reliable sources. A Redditor who goes by the username u/dani21002 made a post on the r/AmItheAsshole subReddit where she explained how she got angry at a "gym rat" who kept insisting on giving her "advice" despite never asking for any.

Reddit: r/AmItheAssholeGyms are filled with these "gym rats" that OP mentioned, some of them provide helpful advice, but some just love bragging about their knowledge and might even present you with misleading information. OP politely denied the guy's request, but he kept on pushing, which led to him getting insulted. She tried to prevent it but he made sure to keep on pushing.
