In November of 2013 Frozen took the entire world by storm. Parents everywhere had "Let It Go" permanently engraved into their memories, not usually by choice. It was a literal phenomenon and everyone was obsessed until a lot of them weren't. Over the last few years as long-awaited sequels and live-action remakes have slowly been taking over as major motion picture releases the chatter over what a Frozen sequel would or should look like got pretty intense. People foamed at the mouth for an opportunity for a character like Elsa with no romantic attachment to be a symbol or beacon for the LGBTQ community and end up with a girlfriend instead of a boyfriend.
Controversy erupted, literally. The mere mention of such a concept churned out bigots who boycotted Disney. Over a theory. Aren't people special? But as of February 13th, 2019 a teaser trailer for Frozen 2 launched and between the excitement and buzz making everyone freak the heck out, some theories have officially started flowing around that the long-anticipated and hoped for dream of the LGBTQ community may come to fruition. Will a major and beloved character become a symbol of representation? Some people definitely think the teaser suggests yes.
InstagramFrozen 2 brings back its original cast with Kristen Bell as Anna, Idina Menzel as Elsa, Jonathan Groff as Kristoff, and Josh Gad as Olaf the snowman and all four of those characters are seen in the trailer (along with everyone's true favorite, Sven the Reindeer.)
But it's the two new characters, seen for only mere seconds, that has people really chattering. Possibly characters voiced by Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown (both of their names appear on the film's IMDb page, but it's unconfirmed if they are indeed the sneak-peek characters,m) we see a young girl with red hair and a blonde boy that shoots straight up in the air out of a pile of leaves, by some magical power.
It took a keen eye because the scene moved fast but this is the Internet, people, and we can do anything.
A red-haired girl standing in a forest during the fall, surrounded by red and brown leaves looks to her side, when suddenly a blonde-haired boy with a green jacket blasts out from underneath a pile of fallen leaves. He then spins up into the air and it all happens in under three seconds. The blip made it very difficult to get a truly good image of the two new characters but thanks to modern technology and the insistence on figuring everything out, people are piecing together theories left and right.
The official description of Frozen 2 says: "Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf will venture out beyond their kingdom to discover some ancient mystery."
Last November, Jennifer Lee (one of the Frozen 2 directors,) said in a Variety Magazine interview that the sequel would bring the beloved main characters, "far out of Arendelle." The Autumn scenic beauty we see in the teaser definitely suggests that this might be exactly what Lee was hinting to!
Check out the trailer and then we'll talk about the theories spreading over Twitter!
One popular theory about the two young kids makes plenty of sense. The girl has auburn-colored hair the boy has blond hair, so it makes perfect sense to assume these kids could be Anna and Kristoff's kids! Does the mysterious girl have powers? People think so! They also think that's precisely why this theory makes sense, surely magical powers run in the family blood line, and despite the few seconds appearance, it definitely looks like the young girl' powers mirror Elsa's but with a different season. Elsa brings out the magic of winter, could this girl bring out he magic of fall? And if it is confirmed she has magical powers, it would make plenty of sense that she is related to Elsa!
But the super juicy theory is that this is the response to the trending topic of 2016 #GiveElsaAGirlfriend. It was shortly after the trending hashtag took over Twitter that co-director Lee spoke with Huffington Post about fans' requests that Elsa be the first gay Disney princess. Giving fans hope, Lee said:
Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things.
The emergence of a new character with potential magical powers and possibly voiced by Evan Rachel Wood (a Hollywood actress vocal about herself being bisexual,) seems like the perfect combination to imply the fans who literally begged for this huge representation of the LGBTQ community to get what they desired.
NowTheEndBegins.comNovember 2019 cannot come fast enough. Whether or not we see Kristoff and Anna as a family with powerful kids or we see Elsa finally get a girlfriend, we're super stoked about this major motion picture release.
And cue Let It Go being stuck in your head for the rest of the week!
