Young Woman Seeks Medical Help From Friend's Ex To Save Mother, Friend Accuses Her Of Betrayal
"I can assure her I don't have any space in my brain to flirt when my mom's health is at risk."

Friendships require the same give and take as romantic relationships. An equal amount of effort needs to come from both sides for the relationship to last.
A 22-year-old OP is reevaluating her relationship with a friend from college after how the latter reacted when OP had a family emergency. Her friend, who we'll call Jane, had a year-long relationship that ended recently.
Jane broke up with her boyfriend because of his narcissistic personality. OP and Jane's ex-boyfriend bonded over their love of Korean pop music.
They interacted over social media when either posted about their common interest. OP immediately asked Jane after the breakup if she was comfortable with her keeping her ex-boyfriend's phone number.
Jane wasn't comfortable with that and asked OP to delete her ex's phone number. OP respected her friend's wishes and hasn't had contact with her ex-boyfriend since the breakup.
That all changed during a recent medical emergency. OP and her dad brought her mom to a public hospital.
They decided to take her elsewhere after 12 hours of no visible improvement. OP needed the results of the ultrasound the hospital did to take her mom to the private clinic her dad found.
OP was getting her ducks in a row when one of the nurses told her they weren't allowed to release the results she asked for. They needed the hospital director's permission to hand them off to OP.
OP knew her mom's condition was time sensitive and she didn't know any way to retrieve the ultrasound results

She was praying for a miracle when she saw Jane's ex-boyfriend walking out

In all the commotion, OP forgot that Jane's ex worked at this hospital. OP and her dad approached him to ask for his assistance. In a few minutes, he got the results they needed.

OP relayed what happened to her friend group. Jane immediately said, "I saw it coming," and left the group chat. OP was taken aback by Jane's abrupt reaction.

OP apologized to Jane for what happened. She did make it clear that she was only thinking of what was best for her mom at that moment. Did OP overstep by talking to Jane's ex during pressing situation?
u/kxmxcy
OP's only priority at that time was her mom's well-being. I highly doubt she was worried about anything else, let alone Jane's feelings.
Embarrassed-Math-699
OP has misplaced guilt brought on by Jane's unfair reaction. She absolutely did nothing wrong.
kxmxcy
OP needed help and without his assistance her mother's health would have been in danger
stephnetkin
OP didn't go to him as a friend, she went to him because of his profession. At the very least, Jane should have let OP explain what happened at the hospital.
kxmxcy
She was only thinking about how she feels. She didn't ask what situation OP's mom was in that warranted interacting with her ex.
ElderberryOwn666
Jane reacted selfishly, plain and simple.

What kind of joke did OP make that made Jane so angry?
Myobright2344
OP's joke wasn't really in poor taste. Leaving the group chat after an "I told you so" moment was too much.
kxmxcy
Jane didn't even consider the situation OP was in and focused on her interaction with the ex-boyfriend
Sunsess38
She doesn't sound like a good friend to be around
kxmxcy
OP was desperate for any kind of help to fast-track her mom's discharge. It wasn't about anyone's ex in that moment. OP just saw somene who could potentially help her and she shouldn't have to apologize for saving her mom.
pnutbuttercups56
She thinks what happened proved her theory of what kind of woman OP is. She doesn't see her as a friend. She just sees her as someone who wants her ex-boyfriend.
kxmxcy
That stuck out to me as well. Why couldn't the hospital release the ultrasound records of a patient to their family?
Moose-Live
That rule sounds like a scam to manipulate patients into staying in the hospital

Redditors voted that OP was not the a**hole for talking to her friend's ex
CosmicStarchild7
If anything, Jane is the one who owes an apology. She placed OP in a box as someone who will cross boundaries just to date their friend's ex.
OP was dealing with a medical emergency that involved her mother's life. The last thing she was worried about was flirting with a friend's ex-boyfriend or offending the said friend's feelings.
