Gavel is a German Shepard from the northern Australian state of Queensland. When he was a puppy he was sent off to train with the Queensland Police Department however unfortunately it was quickly decided that he was just too friendly to be a police dog who needs to do important work like bite people and generally not be very nice.
Gavel was fired from his training but he bounced back quickly, landing a job with the Queensland State Government as Vice-Regal Dog. This important role means Gavel’s duties now include greeting visitors at the Australian province’s official home and workplace of Queensland Governors.
He also attends official functions and even sits in on briefings with the Governor.
