There’s nothing more adorable than coming home to your dog wagging its tail at the front door. These canines just know how to warm the hearts of even the toughest of people. It’s no wonder they are the number one pet choice worldwide.

There are likely over a billion pets worldwide, and dogs make up up to 471 million of them. 

Dogs are incredible companions who provide emotional support for their owners. They are also great helpers for people with disabilities and have been known to improve a person’s health.

Studies have also revealed that even brief interactions with dogs trigger the release of oxytocin, also known as the "cuddle chemical," in the human brain.

Oxytocin lessens stress and anxiety while boosting feelings of relaxation, trust, and empathy. This is why when you cuddle your dog, you get that warm, fuzzy sensation.

Despite all these benefits, there are downsides to being a dog parent. Dogs require time and attention. They have to be catered to both physically and emotionally.

Not to mention that there’s always the possibility of them getting hurt or sick. And if you've had any experience with dogs, you'll know that veterinary treatment is not cheap. 

As a dog parent, it’s essential to plan for yearly exam fees and preventive care, like vaccines and spaying. But unfortunately, some people are unable to handle these responsibilities, thereby leaving many dogs homeless and neglected.

Worst of all, when these dogs get too ill due to neglect, the vets are usually left with no option but to euthanize them.

Thankfully, one dog was saved from this harsh reality in the nick of time. Check out her incredible story below!

Visiting the shelter

Bruno Mirkovich went to his neighborhood animal shelter in hopes of getting a pet. That was the best decision he could have made for both him and the dog that was soon to be his perfect match.

Meeting Edie

Edie, a mixed-breed dog, was in the shelter when Bruno came in. Although she was initially wary of him, she soon became relaxed after realizing that he meant no harm.

Edie had been left behind and was facing imminent euthanasia, having been neglected for a long time. The poor pup was severely malnourished, had matted fur, and was terrified of interacting with humans.

Thankfully, Bruno was able to change her story.
