It's a heartbreaking thing to know that dogs, coined as "man's best friend," are actually the most common victims of neglect and animal abuse. In fact, 65% of animals that experienced abuse are dogs, according to Pawsome Advice.
According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), about ten million animals in the United States alone are abused to death every year. It is deeply saddening that some humans still have the audacity to hurt these helpless animals as if they don't have a life of their own.
Abuse in dogs comes in many forms, such as physically hitting them, restraining them with a short leash, yelling, isolating them, and overall causing them to experience distress even when they did not even do anything remotely wrong—and even if they did, it is never right to hurt these creatures just because you are able, too. Some people are even heartless enough to abandon them in the streets, knowing that they have little chance of survival.
There are certain heartbreaking instances where injured and dying dogs are left abandoned because their owner doesn't care for them enough to actually ensure they wouldn't suffer anymore. Some of them are the ones willingly causing these injuries without any kind of remorse.
That may be the case with this particular dog that the animal rescue organization Mission Paws'ible found...
Meet Michi. She was found in the streets of Bali, with a life-threatening head injury. When they looked closely, the hole in her head was already brimming with maggots.
Her injury may have been caused by a person, or she got into a fight with a dog. But the organization's priority was the fact that she needed help.
The organization is deeply focused on helping dogs feel safe by providing them a place where they can rest calmly without any threats, and most of the time, they are taken to heal in the volunteers' personal homes. They give treatment plans and personalized diets in making sure the dogs that fall under their care would be healed.
Michi's fur had to be shaved because it was already full of dirt, mud, and insects.
Given her painful injury, Michi still had a long way to go before being a fully happy dog. She was also diagnosed with parvovirus after she got moved to foster care.
Parvovirus is very contagious and can spread through direct contact with the dog that has it. It can also spread indirectly.
The dog may have gotten it before being brought to the clinic, and the vaccination purged the virus. Fortunately, Michi still had a perfectly working immune system so she was able to overcome it.
With utmost care, she has flourished into a gorgeous Maltese mix, and is on her way to her full glory.
She is now living happily and healthily under the care of her mum Saffron, who drove 1.5 hours just to meet Michi—and fell in love instantly. Michi has a rescue brother called Garscon, who she spends her time playing with.
Michi now loves living her life by the beach, along with her new family.
She has found a safe haven with a great playmate.
Here she is enjoying her favorite ride.
Thanks to Mission Paws’ible for giving Michi another chance at life!
The organization is intent on helping more dogs like Michi. You may see more details here, and you may also help in rescuing these animals in Bali by donating.
