There's no denying that Disney is one of the biggest entertainment empires the world has ever seen. The leader in the animation industry has given us some of our most fond childhood memories with films and characters such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Cinderella, Peter Pan, and an endless list of others.
Not to mention Disney's multiple film studio divisions, including Pixar, Marvel Studios, and 20th Century Animation, to name just a few. But, along with all of Disney's successes, the company has also accrued its fair share of losses.
In fact, new research has revealed that the Walt Disney Company lost close to $900 million between June 2022 and June 2023. The hefty loss coincides with the release of eight prominent films, including Lightyear, The Little Mermaid, and Elemental.
The eight movies in question cost Disney approximately $2.75 billion in production costs and marketing. However, they only returned around $1.86 billion in revenue.
In addition, the company's streaming platform Disney+ has also experienced a notable decline in subscribers. The loss of around 2.4 million customers is thought to be somewhat relative to the reduction in Disney+ coverage in Southeast Asia and India.
But it's not only money that has been causing a stir around Disney in recent times. Controversy has been swirling around the company since it was suggested that they altered the appearance of The Little Mermaid actress Halle Bailey's skin tone on promotional material for the Chinese market.
Disney has also been grappling with internal issues, resulting in having to lay off more than 7 thousand employees as a means to save money. It seems the Disney empire has a lot of drama going on behind closed doors.
But one thing is for sure - we still adore our Disney movies! Keep scrolling to take a look at the eight films that contributed to the company losing almost $900 million in one year.
