Approximately 5-10% of canines face a unique challenge – being born deaf or experiencing hearing loss as they age. The cause of this hereditary deafness is often linked to gene mutation, affecting certain breeds more than others.
Notably, dogs with striking white coats and mesmerizing blue eyes are particularly susceptible to this type of deafness. Meet Blu, a stunning pit bull with piercing blue eyes and a white coat, who happens to be deaf.
Blu spent days upon days unvisited in an animal shelter until fate intervened. Fortunately, Mark and Sean, business colleagues in San Francisco, were actively seeking to adopt a deaf dog and found two at Family Dog Rescue. Blu was one of the fortunate ones.
From the moment they met her at the shelter, Blu's vibrant and lively personality shone through. Mark shared that she immediately connected with Sean, and the rest is history.
Blu's past wasn't without its challenges; she had previously lived with her first owners for six years until they were forced to give her up due to rental restrictions for pit bulls. Her time in the shelter was prolonged, making it difficult for her to trust her new dads initially.
Gradually, as Blu felt more secure and loved, her personality blossomed. Three years later, she is a happy traveler, enjoying car rides and embracing the love and attention of Mark and Sean.
Their bond is extraordinary, and Blu and her dads have developed a unique way of communicating. Blu can discern their intentions by observing their movements, and they understand her emotional cues without the need for words.
Blu's deafness has no impact on her life or her interactions with her new family, except that it affects her ability to form close relationships with other dogs. Mark and Sean emphasize that deaf dogs, like Blu, listen with their hearts, and they have a special place in their lives.
They have worked with a trainer to teach Blu stress-relief techniques like stretching, and she remains unaffected by loud noises like fireworks. Seeing the profound connection between Blu and her dads is heartwarming.
It's evident that Blu feels at ease and content with her new family, and they are overjoyed to have her as part of their home.
Blu felt uncertain about what they wanted from her and whether their plan was to return her to the shelter.

Mark and Sean's dedication to Blu's well-being, their willingness to learn her unique communication style, and their ability to understand her emotions without spoken words is a testament to the strong bond they share.
