It shouldn't come as a surprise that a shelter cat recently impressed a volunteer by solving a complex mathematical problem that she had been unable to solve on her own. Indeed these felines are intelligent little monsters.
Kat Garfield, a volunteer at the animal shelter, found herself stuck on a crucial problem. In an effort to clear her thoughts, she put down her pencil and went to the cupboard to prepare dinner for the cats.
While preparing bowls of wet food, Kat could hear the pages of her book turning and the crinkling of paper in the notebook she'd left alongside it. Without a second thought, she resumed preparing dinner under the assumption that another volunteer had gone into the cat room.
However, when Kat returned to the room, she discovered that there were no humans there—only cats. In addition, one of the kitties was draped over the schoolwork she had left behind.
A red pen was sitting next to cat Will's paw, and the solution to the problem was written in Kat's notebook, complete with purrfectly detailed instructions for each step.
But how could a cat possibly know how to do calculus? I mean, they're not even supposed to be able to count, right?
Maybe we can find answers as we dive deeper into this mysteriously amazing story.
Einstein kitty
KatYou can find Kat Garfield giving back to the community at Cat Rescue in the city of Sylvester. When she's not hanging out with shelter cats, she studies at the California Institute of Technology.
Kat is taking Calculus I this semester as a pre-requisite for a veterinary degree. She enjoys the course very much because mathematics is one of her favorite subjects.
Kat also enjoys doing her homework while the shelter cats are around her.
The cats make me think better, she says
Kat was stuck on an integration problem during one of her homework sessions with the kittens. She had to think extra hard for the solution, but it just wouldn't come.
Kat had tried to solve the same problem nine times, and each time, she got stuck at the same point. Something about the problem wasn't making sense.

KatJust when she was about to give up, Will showcased his mathematical skills
KatKat explained how Will came to her rescue;
I had just decided to wait and ask my professor about it because I was so stuck, but Will showed me the answer.
Kat had forgotten to include the constant of integration when trying to determine the antiderivative, but Will pointed it out to her by adding the C.
I couldn’t believe a cat solved a calculus problem! She said
Will is truly a mathematical prodigy. As a good feline, he enjoys hunting for toy mice and greeting everyone he meets with a kind head bump.
Will has a history of pulling off the seemingly impossible, as demonstrated by this stunning mathematical feat. This clever kitty once orchestrated a breakout from the cat chamber and led his fellow felines to the pantry for a delicious feast.
To achieve this, Will needed to figure out how to open the locked door to the cat room as well as the locked door to the food storage. Security cameras captured the incident, but staff and volunteers are still baffled.
Having just solved Kat's schoolwork, Will has done the impossible yet again.
How amazing is Will?
It's amazing what animals can do when they put their minds to it. Will is a prime example of how much potential our furry friends have.
Just imagine what other abilities cats and other animals could possess that we don't know about? We should always be open to learning new things, and the next time you're feeling stuck on a problem, maybe it's worth asking your pet for some help!
