People are Ignoring Netflix's Warning to Stop Doing the ‘Bird Box Challenge’

Recently we have seen a slew of ridiculous challenges, the most popular of them being the tide pod challenge. In the same poorly thought through vein, the Netflix original movie ‘Birdbox’ has inspired its own challenge.

Similar to the other challenges this challenge serves no purpose and is not only dumb and gullible but it inspires people to copy it in a search for online clicks and views. Like with the main character of the Netflix film, this challenge requires the participation to blindfold themselves and navigate around.

Despite Netflix openly stating that they do not want people to do the challenge, more have continued to do it, some even doing it for the span of 24 hours.

The challenge

This challenge is named the ‘Bird Box challenge’ named after the Netflix hit starring Sandra Bullock. This movie gained over 45 million views and has spawned various memes. This however is the most pointless and potentially harmful thing to come from the movies popularity. Like the main characters in the film, the people participating in this challenge are to blindfold themselves and navigate around. Here are some examples of people who have participated in the challenge.

24 hours? Why?

It looks dangerous even from the thumbnail.

I don’t understand the appeal of this beyond views.

Straight from New York. Dangerous as ever.

In this clip from New York you can see the harm that can be done as the person featured falls down the stairs leading to the subway.

Netflix’s response.

net has responded encouraging people to no do this challenge as it would be unsafe. Despite this warning, people have (as of the date I’m writing this) continued to do the challenge. In fact, some claim they didn’t know about the challenge until Netflix addressed it and would be doing it because they saw them address it.

Netflix’s response.
