He's been one of the more generous billionaires as he's given away a lot of his money.

He's stayed off the billionaire's list because he's given away about $100 billion to various good causes. This is about 65% of his income, which has helped keep his name off that list.

Although he is quite a wealthy man, giving away a lot of his earnings essentially makes him look less wealthy than he is. He's been focused more on his impact by building his businesses, supporting education and technology, and donating to various charities over the years.

Entrepreneur Chinnakannan Sivasankaran has spoken about Tata in the past, saying, “What is so special about Ratan Tata is his selflessness and patriotism. He is a very balanced person, always focused on excellence and the good of the country, unlike me, who is always after money."

He continued, “For him, money is just a byproduct. His objective was always about what he could do for the country, even if it took 20 years. He was planting seeds for the future, like a banana tree. I don’t have that kind of mentality.”
