A first glance at an African rain frog would make you wonder what made these creatures so sad and grumpy. However, their look doesn't necessarily mean they are actually sad; it's simply their natural look.
Native to the Southern Coast of Africa, these frogs live in 6-inch deep burrowed tunnels and, despite their tiny size, have the unique ability to stretch up to two inches long (approx. 5 cm). They belong to a burrowing species and reside on the fringes of forests.
These frogs do not necessarily need to be around water in order to survive. When confronted with a potential threat, they puff up and display an aggressive pose that also includes making their bodies expand to become bigger.
The increased body size helps the African rain frog become safer by making it harder to be fetched from its hole by predators. The female African rain frog discharges a sticky substance during the mating season to ensure the male's balance and prevent it from falling; this phenomenon is known as adhesive amplexus.
This shows the collaboration between males and females in the animal kingdom and what we, as humans, perceive as loyalty. Males and females complete each other in a lot of different ways.
