Frogs, people love them or hate them. Besides the fact that their unpredictable hopping can be unsettling to some folks (me, I’m some folks), frogs are undeniably cute to look at.

They are these adorable little mostly green lumps of idyllic peace. Think about it, nearly every depiction of a frog looks either incredibly happy or fully relaxed.

Maybe we were conditioned to love frogs because of stories like Princess and the Frog, or characters like Kermit the Frog. However we’ve come to love them, the internet REALLY loves them.

So much so that there’s been an official term coined for sharing photos of frogs, with or without silly or witty captions: “Frogposting.” And while the term may be on the newer side of things, sharing frogs on the internet has been a vital part of meme culture for decades now.

Surprisingly, frogs had quite the resurgence of fame in 2020, mainly thanks to Instagram users and the crossover of pandemic doom and the love of the cottagecore aesthetic. Frogs have been able to provide a mixture of sweet, silly and calming enjoyment for social media users looking to escape the doomscrolling.

Frogs even have a whole month dedicated to them! April is National Frog Month, and apparently, it is because frogs “represent a symbol of transition, the leap from one thing, place, and situation to another. “
