Students at Chippewa Secondary School are learning just how difficult parenting can be with the help of some very life-like fake babies. The teenage students got to take the fake babies home with them for a fun-filled weekend as part of their annual class project. Sounds simple enough, right?
Well, the teacher of the class, Andrea Lefebvre soon discovered that the students were perhaps not quite as prepared for the babies as she had hoped.
When the teens got stuck, it was their instructor they would turn to, and boy did she receive some interesting texts during those couple of days.
“Our students are in a grade 11 class called Raising Healthy Children,” Andrea said. “The students bring home one of the Real Care babies for the weekend to apply their learning for the caring for a newborn unit.
Lefebvre said that the babies cry, need to be held, burped, and their diapers need to be changed just like a real baby. The dolls also record the way they are handled.
“Our school board (Near North District School Board) owns the babies and each school accesses them through the year for their classes,” Lefebvre added. “Lots of use!”
“Students look forward to this unit when they register for the course. We really love this unit. Great discussions and real-life learning.”
