Riddles designed for kids can be really difficult for adults to solve. It is mainly because the minds of children work differently than the minds of adults.

Adults are limited by their unconscious, and often very conscious fear that they will look stupid, so our brain limits the possible solutions to the ones that are reasonable. Every abstract thought or solution is buried deep and never looked back upon. 

We really hate looking stupid.

That is why we suffocate our creativity. Just think of the snake that swallowed an elephant from “The Little Prince.”
