This adorable addition to the Disney family came into the world last month, but the happy occasion was released to the press just a few days ago.
The tiny baby porcupine, aka porcupette, was brought into the world by porcupine mom Peri. She is a TV star – she had her debut on One Day at Disney last year, where she had an ultrasound examination. Who knows, maybe the baby will follow her mom's footsteps.
The female porcupine doesn't have an official name, it is yet to be determined, and we hope it will do justice to her charm.
Check out the photos.
@drmarkatdisney/InstagramDr. Mark Penning, who is the vice president of animals, science, and environment at Disney Parks, shared on Instagram the news of the park’s newest member last week.
He wrote:
“Today, I’m delighted to share some exciting news: a baby prehensile-tailed porcupine – or porcupette – was born @Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Mother, Peri, and baby are doing great.”
He added that it’s the porcupette’s spikes that tell their gender, and that all porcupines are born with a delicate, red fur coat, and after that, the quills harden and help establish gender.
Dr. Penning added that, even though the park at this time closed due to the Covid 19, the animals are still getting "top-notch care."
He said:
"Although @WaltDisneyWorld is temporarily closed, our animal care team continues to provide top-notch care to thousands of animals each and every day. Cast members like Disney veterinarian, Dr. Natalie, provide continual care for Peri – from annual exams, to pregnancy check-ups, the birth of her porcupette, and of course, post-partum care."
We sure hope that people can visit the park's newest member soon.
