Adorable Puppy Named Brody (A K-9 Therapy Dog) Dozed Off During His Own Swearing-In Ceremony

Allow me to introduce to you, precious little Brody, a 3 month old chocolate Labrador puppy who just became Bristol's Police Department's most recent K-9 comfort dog. K-9 comfort dogs are dogs who work professionally to bring comfort to people experiencing trauma and traumatic events.

Brody may be a puppy but being welcomed into the community of K-9 comfort dogs is a big deal, worthy of celebrating. The puppy's sweet squishy little face even had a swearing-in ceremony.

What's the scoop with it? Well, it happened on a Monday morning, and I definitely imagine you can relate to what I'm about to divulge next.

Monday of April 6th, 2020, too darn early in the morning, the Rhode Island Police Department officially put adorable Brody into the line of duty as their new K-9 comfort pup.

They even lived streamed the event on Facebook, and Brody did not disappoint! Pre-training must have been quite the adventure for this little puppy, because he passed out cold during the event, missing the speech by Officer Medeiros, Brody’s caretaker and on-duty partner.

It even included a short Q&A session! But Brody was busy catching those zzz's instead.

Those that watched the event, gushed over Brody's deep slumber. Especially midway through the video when he put himself into a much more comfortable position on the table. He even got a few chuckles from those around the room!

Lucky for us, Bored Panda got in touch with Officer Medeiros, Brody's caretaker. He spoke to them about the original inspiration behind the comfort support dog: “I was inspired by our department’s Chief of Police Kevin Lynch who wanted to implement a K9 unit into our department. I began to research patrol K9s, such as bomb and narcotic detection, and came across some information on Facebook, in the New England Police Comfort Dogs group. I was immediately drawn to this type of therapy and comfort dog program.”

Then he went on to say,

“I then made contact with Peggi and David Brogan who own Boonefield Labradors in Rindge, New Hampshire, and who generously donates Labradors to police departments that want to start this type of program. After many weeks of research and making contacts from across New England, I put a proposal together and presented it to Chief Lynch, who has supported me and this program from the start.”

Fun fact about this precious guy, his name was given to him because of Bristol Police Department, (B) and (rody) came from Rhode Island. Talk about a play on words! I love it.

His caretaker, Medeiros, is a public school resource officer and he oversees all the schools in Bristol. He's spoken about how he sees tons of opportunities for Brody, who's primary job will be to serve kids of all ages as the loving K-9 therapy pup. So loving, that they've even got plans in the works to bring him to veteran's homes, senior centers, the local university, and as many community events as possible.

“Unfortunately, with what’s going on in the world today with COVID-19, we are unable to get as many interactions with the community as we would like. A typical day for Brody at this time is playing a lot and obviously sleeping a lot.”

He went on to say, “During the week, he is usually making security checks of the five schools in our town 2-3 times a day and getting used to the police station and all the sworn and civilian members. He gets as many interactions as it’s possible while practicing social distancing. When COVID-19 is under control, he will be with me in our local high school on a daily basis as well as the elementary schools in our district.”

Unfortunately with the current COVID-19 issue, making sure that Brody has as much interaction as possible has been put to a halt. But he still loves on Medeiros' family, the employees of the department, and neighbors when he's allowed.

“At this time bringing Brody on as a sworn police officer has been all positive,” explained Officer Medeiros. “The most challenging part right now is trying to manage COVID-19 and still get him the appropriate training he needs for his job. We are managing well, but it is challenging.”

So much so, that Officer Medeiros gushed that despite the lockdown, during this challenging time is precisely the best time for Brody to be working with him and on official duty.

Considering so many citizens are full of stress and anxiety right now, especially those on the front lines. The department vouched that whenever Brody trollops into a room, all the other officers grow smiles on their faces. Then they rush to greet him with, love, praise, and tons of play interaction.

Brody is expected to begin his formal K-9 training around a month from now. And he will be making monthly trips back to his birthplace, which is Boonefield Labradors in New Hampshire. After a year, if all goes well and Brody passes all of his testing he will become a certified therapy and comfort dog.

The audience loved Brody's swearing-in ceremony so much, that it went viral online almost instantly. The Bristol Rhode Island Police Department's Facebook page has gained over 250k views since it was originally posted!

Officer Medeiros was asked one last question, 'What are Brody's favorite toys and snacks?'

His answer was no surprise; “Brody’s favorite toy is what ever his big brother Ziggy is playing with—I have a 6-year-old black English Labrador who loves to play with Brody. As for Brody’s favorite snack, it’s his training treats! He’s very much food motivated!”

He even has his own sticker! I'm gushing over here!
