One Lighting Artist Shares Examples Of His Work So People Could Understand What His Job Actually Is

Living in modern times, we are used to getting everything served on a plate, and we don’t really know how much work even the simplest products need. Especially when it comes to the things that are meant to entertain us, like cartoons for instance.

Because they are made for fun, they can’t be too complicated to make, right?

Well, no. It takes a lot of time and effort from many artists to get the finished cartoon we all would enjoy.

One of those artists, Dan O’Brien, recently shared an interesting Twitter thread about his job as a lighting artist.

And it is a real eye-opener.

“When I tell people I do lighting for animated movies, they usually don’t understand what I mean by that,” he tweeted. To clarify what his job involves, O’Brien shared several shots from a new cartoon he worked on named “Spies in Disguise.” You can see the basic “before” scene and the illuminated ‘after’ version.

O’Brien’s work shows how lighting is responsible for creating depth, realism and the total atmosphere in the scene. It is a finishing touch, but one the movie couldn’t do without. It literally adds life to it.

The lighting artist’s job is to improve other artists’ work and to create a beautifully lit structure that will make the atmosphere more enticing and the viewers more involved in the story.
