If you are a fan of Volkswagen vehicles, then you have to see this one entirely made of Lego bricks. You’re gonna love it, for sure.
The Volkswagen Type 2 Camper is well-known as the most used camper model in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. After seeing this symbol of culture, you simply cannot escape the sense of nostalgia that goes with it.
For those who remember and appreciate its purpose, Lego masters have made a full-size Volkswagen camper Type 2 from Lego. Get ready to hit the road of nostalgia and revive the past.
There are only 12 officially certified LEGO model makers in the world, and one of them Rene Hoffmeister, along with his colleague Pascal Lenhard, assembled this magnificent creation. With the help of 3D modeling, this duo managed to create the plan for the construction and even calculated the exact number of LEGO bricks needed.
The camper is created around a steel frame weighing 1,542 pounds (approximately 700kg). Due to its lasting stability, this fascinating life-size model can withstand two adults, which allows exploring the retro interior.
It took 400,000 pieces of Lego and almost six weeks to complete the masterpiece. But the whole plan almost went down the water when they discovered that they are 20 000 transparent pieces short for constructing the vehicle’s windows.
However, this delay didn’t demoralize them, they worked day and night, and in the end that extra work paid off. They managed to finish this project before the deadline and displayed the full-size VW T2 Camper LEGO replica at the F.RE.E Leisure and Travel Fair in Munich, Germany.

At the F.RE.E Leisure and Travel Fair in Munich, Germany this Volkswagen T2 Camper LEGO reproduction was displayed along with other non-Lego versions.
TinEye2. It is entirely made out of LEGO bricks, except for the wheels which are from a real Type 2 campervan.
LEGO masters even managed to incorporate the iconic pop-up roof and a fully functional, well-known sliding door.
TinEye3. It took around six weeks to create this masterpiece.
Because of the delay of 20 000 transparent pieces they had to work overtime. As said by Hoffmeister:
“Essentially, we would have needed a nine-day week. However, as they don’t exist, the only option was night shifts.”
TinEye4. Retro interior symbolizes the “on the road” culture.
Those precise details on the inside give it a homey touch and the finishing details are amazing.
TinEye5. The details inside are made of LEGO bricks, too.
The interior of the LEGO van is equipped with all the necessary things. Such as a camping kitchen with a gas stove, fridge, toothbrushes, radio, and all other things one camper might need while he’s on the road.
TinEye6. And the smallest detail is given incredible attention. Look at these headlights.
It measures 16.4 feet (5m) in length and it just might be the new world’s record.
TinEyeInspired by VW Camper T2, aka Bulli, this LEGO model is not something your child can play with, and it certainly wouldn’t fit in his bedroom. The creators dare to say that this LEGO recreation is possibly in for a new world record.
As homage to the VW campervan, the Lego replica was displayed at the F.RE.E Leisure and Travel Fair in Munich, Germany. And the crowd was more than amazed by it.
After creating the full-size model of VW Camper out of LEGO bricks, LEGO released the desk-sized version. Now everyone can construct this iconic model, and by creating a smaller version LEGO also satisfied the passionate collectors.
