Every family has its own unique set of rules and regulations that they use to govern their household. These rules are often based on the family's values and beliefs and can range from very strict to very flexible.
While these rules may not always make sense to outsiders, they are important to the family and should be respected by everyone. OP was home for Christmas break with her family.
Her brother (20m) still lives at home and believes he can do whatever he wishes simply because he is an adult. Her mother set some rules for him as he still lives at home; empty the dishwasher daily, bring out the recycle and only have his girlfriend over when either she or OP's stepfather are home.
On this day, her brother had his girlfriend over, and OP was the only one there. Her mother and stepfather found out (they have a couple of cameras to watch their dog when no one is home), which led to a minor disagreement.
OP's stepfather was going to leave work to come home and ask her to leave, and her mother called OP to make her leave first so there wouldn't be a big fight (OP's brother and stepfather do not get along). OP, also not wanting a fight, did just that, went down, and told them she had to leave.
After an argument, they both stormed out. OP feels bad because she left crying and believes that OP's family hates her when in reality, she appears to be a sweet girl, and they have nothing against her, just her brother's disrespectful attitude.

RedditOP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the a-hole:
RedditWhy they made the GF leave?
RedditSimply because they can...
RedditRight!
RedditStupid rules deserve to be called stupid
RedditMaybe the son should get his own place
Reddit"It's ultimately your parents' house, and if he wants to remain under their roof, he has to follow their rules"
RedditOP just did what she was asked to do.
RedditOP made some things clear:
RedditIt can be hard to live by someone else's rules, especially if they are very different from your own. However, it is important to remember that these rules have been put in place to ensure the safety and well-being of the family unit.
Even if you don't agree with or understand the rules, you should still respect them and follow them as best you can. When it comes to rules and regulations, communication is key.
If you don't understand why a certain rule is in place, talk to your family and try to get an explanation. This will not only help you to better understand why the rule is there, but it will also help you to respect it more.
In the end, it is important to remember that each family has their own set of rules. While we may not always agree with them, we should still strive to respect them and follow them as best we can.
