Bonded Dogs Hug Their Way Away From Certain Death In Viral Photos That Saved Their Lives

They were a day away from being euthanized when a photo of them hugging changed everything.

It's a desperately sad reality that there are more dogs in this world that need homes than there are families and homes for dogs available. In Atlanta, Georgia every year over 131,000 cats and dogs are euthanized and some dogs are put to sleep simply for not being adopted fast enough.

Kara and Kiera, a pair of bonded dogs, were on a similar path, with not much time left and the clock quickly ticking, a photo of the dogs was taken and shared to the rescue organization Angels Among Us Pet Rescue in Atlanta, Georgia.

The rescue pleaded with their public following on Facebook to help save the dogs' lives the very day they were set to be euthanized with a photo of them literally hugging each other. The emotional plea was sincere and heartfelt, as rescue workers often care deeply about preventing the unnecessary death of any dog.

"I'm Kala. This is Keira. We're so scared in here."

Two dogs, one story.

Angels Among Us wrote, pleading with their community:

"The people working in the shelters see how scared we are but just told each other that today is our deadline. We have to have someone rescue us or we'll be “next.” Keira is black and not a “real boxer,” just a mix.

She's so brave and tells me it will be okay no matter what happens. She tells me to be brave too but I don't know if I can be. Can you see our faces? Keira knows what will happen. You can see it in her eyes.

She's putting on a brave face for sure but I can feel her heart beating fast while I'm clinging to her. If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I'll see her as she goes down the hallway. She won't come back and I'll cry. They'll come for me next and I won't be as brave.

We've comforted each other while we were here. She gave me hope when I had none. Now it's over. Unless..."

Approximately 2 hours and 6 minutes after they posted their desperate, heart-wrenching plea, the two dogs were taken into a foster home with Chris Folchitto.

Even better, though? Both dogs were adopted into their forever home not too long after that!

Roommates and longtime friends from Georgia, Wendy and Pam brought the dog duo home on October 25th just a few months after they were hours away from leaving this earth.

Volunteer Cris Folchitto told Huffington Post: "“Amazingly, even with all the publicity this summer, we had very few qualified adoption applications, but this is a great fit."

Pam told Huffington Post that when she first heard Kara and Kiera's story she was still coping with the grief of losing her two elderly dogs.

It was after she heard that the viral hugging dogs still hadn't found their forever home that she felt compelled to move forward and submit an application.

In a press release, Pam said:

“It just fell together. We turned our tears into smiles with these two young, playful dogs.”

According to their website, AAUPR is, "a 501(c)3 non-profit volunteer-based organization dedicated to rescuing dogs and cats from high-kill shelters in north Georgia." They use a network of foster homes to help save as many pets as possible and when Kara and Kiera were safe and sound, they posted overjoyed:

AAUPR has been rescueing pets since 2009.

They depend on donations and volunteers to keep doing their good work, but their Facebook page shows no shortage of success stories thanks to the efforts of countless people.
