Can't wait to revisit my childhood nightmares with this
Off the top of my head, there are two book series that are universally beloved and have made millions worldwide: Harry Potter and Goosebumps. Written by R.L. Stine, who is often described as the Stephen King of kids’ books, the Goosebumps series is being re-imagined in a TV show.
And look, maybe I was just a scaredy-cat, but the Goosebumps books used to genuinely terrify me. The cover art was scary and the plots were wacky, but still somehow believable enough to be scary.
Nevertheless, I loved them. Along with so many kids I knew, getting spooked by Goosebumps was the best way to spend designated reading time in class.
Scholastic Entertainment is working with Neal H. Moritz (who produced the movies) and Sony Pictures TV to create the series.
Iole Lucchese, the Scholastic Entertainment President and Cheif Strategy Officer, told Deadline:
“Goosebumps has been keeping kids and families on the edge of their seats for nearly 30 years and we’re very excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television and Neal H. Moritz to bring the enduring brand to life in a fresh new way for today’s generation.
From the world-famous book series to a full-scale licensing program and even live-action movies starring Jack Black, Goosebumps remains wildly popular and we look forward to presenting new adventures to give fans even more Goosebumps.”
While the previous movies, starring Jack Black, haven't been all that successful. The first one was good enough to get a sequel, but it hasn't had the cultural effect that the books did.
The book series, now featuring a staggering 62 titles (and more if you include spin-offs) was a worldwide success--having been translated into 32 languages.
While not much is known about the new show currently, it is safe to say that we are ready to get spooky!
Moritz has said:
“I loved making the Goosebumps movies and can’t wait to bring even more of R. L. Stine’s incredible stories to life through a high-end television series that speaks to both adults and kids alike”
How about you? Are you excited?
