The Newest Aladdin Trailer Gives Us The First Look at the Genie and the Internet Is Opinionated About it

Recently the newest trailer for the live action adaptation of Aladdin was released and it gave the first look at Will Smith as the Genie. This role was made popular by the late Robin Williams who played the role in the animated film and, who many would say, is irreplaceable.

Although Disney has tried to replace Williams as the iconic role multiple times over the years, none have had the connection to the audience that Robin did. As a result, the first look at this new genie has gotten some mixed responses with some believing that Disney has finally gone too far.

This trailer gave the first look at the Genie. This character had been an iconic character from many peoples childhoods. The last time another actor besides Robin Williams took on the role was in 1994 for the animated film ‘Return of Jafar’ where Dan Castellaneta ( The voice of Homer Simpson) took on the role. Like in that instance, this version of the genie was put under high criticism, this time not for the voice but the design of this version of the character.

The fan redesign

One Twitter user, Raf Grassetti took on the challenge of redesigning the genie featured in the trailer. Although this edit hasn’t gotten widespread attention, those who have seen it have said that they do prefer this over the one featured in the trailer.

The first look at the character.

This trailer wasn’t the first look we had gotten of the character. The first look came on an exclusive cover of Entertainment Weekly. Just like the trailer after it, this depiction of the genie was highly criticised for its lack of accuracy because the genie is blue and Will Smith on that cover was not. In this case the actor came out with a statement on Instagram.

"And yes, I’m gonna be BLUE!" Will Smith stated.

“Hot Jafar”

Another stand out of the trailer was the appearance of Jafar. This brief appearance had A lot of the Internet talking. Some even went so far as to call this version of the character hot Jafar.

Jasmine

This trailer also gave us a look at Naomi Scott playing Jasmine. To many this character looks brilliant wearing shimmery and colourful clothing. Despite the work that went into the character design, this depiction, just like that of the genie Was met with scrutiny based on the actress chosen and the perceived age of the character.

Finally, Aladdin Himself!

Last but not least the trailer gave a look at the title character himself. This version of Aladdin is played by Mena Massoud. His take of the character seems to be very reminiscent of the animated version but with his own unique spin.
