In a conversation with USA Today, Dave Kareken revealed, “We spent hours calling out and searching for her, but there was no trace."

After searching for hours with no trace of their dog, Dave and Joy concluded that they had lost her forever. They left to get their son, who was camping in Minnesota and then made the sad journey back to their residence in Asheville, N.C.

Meanwhile, Kali was out in the wilderness, determined to beat the hunger and cold to reunite with her family.

While Dave was at home one day, a phone call came with unbelievable news. Kali had been found alive!—against all odds, she had wrestled her life back!

“When I learned she was alive, I collapsed,” Kareken recalled. “I fell to my knees to offer prayers of gratitude and thanks.”

For ten long days, Kali had braved the unforgiving wilderness before miraculously reappearing at a nearby campsite.
