"The heart-warming story-line is inspired by the themes of traditions, family togetherness, and nostalgia, and introduces two new characters."
Disney's latest Christmas ad is making people feel all kinds of emotions. The 3-minute ad was first released on November 9th and focuses on the importance of family and keeping traditions.
The short animation particularly hit home for those with a Filipino background, as it features a Filipino grandmother and her granddaughter. "Disney EMEA has launched its 2020 festive campaign 'From Our Family To Yours,' including its first-ever Christmas advert, a three-minute animated tale telling a touching story of a grandmother, her granddaughter, and the family traditions that connect them through the years," Disney wrote on their website.
Disney has teamed up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and for every purchase of the vintage Mickey Mouse plush featured in the ad, 25% of profits will go to the charity. The plush is featured in the ad as a gift passed down through generations.
The adorable pair then make paper decorations together for their home. In a heart-warming twist, the grandma's name is Lola, which is the Filipino word for grandmother.
The video only gets more emotional from there. As the granddaughter gets older, she loses interest in spending time with her elderly grandmother and celebrating their family traditions.
The granddaughter, who is now an adult, comes home one night to find the Mickey plush in the living room with one ear missing. After looking through family photos featuring the Mickey toy, she is touched and decides it's time to bring back the holiday traditions she used to share with her grandmother.
"A grandmother, Lola, and her granddaughter – alongside familiar friend Mickey Mouse who features as a much-loved toy, gifted to Lola as a young child by her father in 1940. With each passing year, Mickey comes to symbolize Lola's childhood and a present-day connection to her granddaughter, ultimately inspiring a festive surprise on Christmas morning."
