Guest Starts Becoming Disrespectful In The Middle Of A Funeral Because She Was Forced To Stay In The Hotel
Is he obligated to let his mom's friends stay in his condo?

Orangenormal on Reddit posted on the "AITA" subreddit, sharing a situation where his mother offered his condo to two of her friends without his knowledge or consent. Orangenormal and his husband live far from their parents, but they happily accommodate them in their condo when they visit.
They have a guest room and a guest bathroom, making it easy to host visitors without it being an imposition. However, Orangenormal's mother took advantage of their hospitality by offering their home to two of her friends without their consent.
When Orangenormal found out, he declined to let the two women stay, citing his lack of familiarity with them and his work commitments during the day. Orangenormal's mother tried to sweeten the deal and guilt-trip him by saying the women would cook for them and explaining that one of them had lost her husband and son and could use the financial assistance and company.
Despite this, Orangenormal still refused and recommended hotels for the women to stay in. Things got awkward when one of the women confronted Orangenormal at his grandmother's funeral, introducing herself as the person he denied accommodation.
Orangenormal tried to be polite but was shocked the woman was offended by the rejection. While Orangenormal empathizes with the woman's hardships, he doesn't think he did anything wrong in refusing to let them stay in his home because they are strangers.
Here's what the AITA community thinks about the incident.
Here's OP's post.

Was he wrong? Reddit responds.

A funeral isn't the right place to confront someone.

He escaped a potential disaster

His mom and her friend disrespected his boundaries.

His mother should cover the woman's hotel bills.

He should have replied sarcastically.

Many things about the incident are wrong.

He's not obligated to help strangers.

He handled the encounter way too nicely.

The woman's behavior suggests she must be mentally unstable.

His shouldn't be treated like an Airbnb.

His mother's action is out of bounds

His mother and her friend are jerks.

He needs to set firm boundaries for his mother.

The woman's audacity to confront him at his grandmother's funeral is mind-boggling.

His mother enabled her friend's rudeness.

He should inform his mother that she will start staying at hotels if she oversteps her boundaries again.

His mother shouldn't do things she wouldn't like done to her.

His mother's entitlement stems from not recognizing that he's now an adult.

This is a better way to respond to the woman's introduction.

The woman's behavior proves he made the right decision.

What do you think?
It is important to seek people's consent before making arrangements that involve using their properties, even if they are close family members. Everyone deserves the right to decide who can use their personal space and when.
While it can be tempting to assume that family members will be okay with you making plans on their behalf, it's always better to check with them first. Failing to do so can lead to conflicts, misunderstandings, and resentment.
