Holiday cheer may be spreading across Tacoma and neighboring cities, but one local “villain” is turning the season of giving into a season of scheming. 

Meet Jasmine Willie, better known as the infamous “Chicken Scam Lady,” whose name has become synonymous with fraudulent refund scams. Far from a one-hit wonder, Jasmine has allegedly perfected her grift, leaving a trail of frustrated small business owners in her wake.

The question is: How does she do it?

By targeting local businesses, Willie claims refunds for bad chicken or other items she never purchased, spinning tales of poor treatment or faulty goods.

Add a dash of emotional manipulation, and you have a scam that’s netted her thousands of dollars across Tacoma, Auburn, Kent, and beyond. While her antics may seem like a page out of a holiday comedy, the damage she causes is no laughing matter.

Now, with the holidays approaching and businesses bustling, the Chicken Scam Lady is back, targeting unsuspecting establishments. With such characters around, the holiday season might be dampened for potential victims.

But not everyone is falling for her ploys—some, like the co-owners of Side Piece Kitchen in Tacoma, have taken matters into their own hands.

At Side Piece Kitchen, co-owner Hailey Hernandez recalls vividly the moment she encountered Willie. “I got a call—‘Hailey, the chicken scammer is here,’” she said, adding that she quickly confronted the alleged scammer and chased her off.

Hailey and her husband, Dante, have had enough of Willie’s antics. The couple keeps a vigilant watch during the holiday season, aware that Willie’s scams tend to ramp up this time of year.

Security footage captured Hailey’s no-nonsense approach, making Willie one of the rare scammers to be turned away empty-handed.

Willie’s modus operandi involves walking into businesses, claiming she was sold bad food, and demanding immediate refunds—usually in cash. In some cases, she reportedly argues that she was mistreated because of her race. 

She once claimed to have made a large purchase for her church, only for the food to be “spoiled.” While many employees give in to avoid confrontation or bad reviews, others, like Hailey, stand their ground.

Police say Willie’s scams have hit businesses from Seattle to Puyallup, with her most recent heist netting over $800 from three establishments on November 12. 

Despite multiple warrants for her arrest, Willie continues to operate freely, her scams as brazen as ever.

But it’s not just her audacious scams that make Willie stand out—it’s her distinctive “uniform.” Security footage and images released by police show her repeatedly wearing pajama pants during her alleged thefts. The look has even earned her another nickname. 

“She’s like the pajama Grinch,” Hailey quipped. “Maybe she gets them for the holidays. Hello Kitty seems to be her favorite.

Willie has been thrown out of Side Piece multiple times, but even that isn’t enough to deter her. She keeps returning time and time again, perhaps hoping for some kind of breakthrough. 

Local authorities are urging business owners to stay vigilant. Auburn Police advise anyone approached by Jasmine to avoid engaging and call 911 immediately.

While law enforcement continues to track her down, small business owners are left on edge, hoping to avoid her scams during the busy holiday season.

And as for Willie? Well, if the pajama-wearing chicken scammer is still out there, Tacoma might have its very own “Grinch” story in the making.
