Sometimes, living with family isn't ideal, especially when conflicts arise. And Reddit user u/RealGreatDane has certainly learned that the hard way.
The Redditor recently shared a story in the AITA (Am I The A**hole?) subreddit about the issues he's facing with his twin brother and their father. You see, the OP and his father moved into a three-bedroom condo around three years ago.
OP's brother was not initially living with them because of his past bad behavior, however, their dad decided to allow him to move into the condo a year ago. The thing is, during the time the family was living apart, OP's brother got himself two cats, and OP and his father had gotten a dog.
The Redditor says he knew there would be some complications with the animals, purely because of his brother being irresponsible. And, well, he was right!
OP says his brother keeps the cats locked in his bedroom 24/7 with their food and dirty litter while he goes out and has fun. He is never home to take care of them, so OP and his father end up looking after them.
When the OP told his brother that he would no longer take care of the cats no matter what, things changed slightly for a little while. But it didn't take long for OP's brother to slip back into his old habits.
So, nowadays, it's just poor old dad that is looking after the animals, and considering he is getting on in age and has severe arthritis, the OP is even more furious than he was before.
The Redditor says he wants to "shove those cats in a box and sell them to a family that will actually take care of them and not keep them trapped in a small room all day." So, is he the a**hole here?
The OP asked:
Reddit/RealGreatDane"He never stays home to take care of his cats."
Reddit/RealGreatDane"I want to shove those cats in a box and sell them."
Reddit/RealGreatDaneHere's how people reacted.
Reddit/Spank_Cakes"They're not yours to sell."
Reddit/Significant_Win6431Speak to them first!
Reddit/remembrandy"What does your dad say about the situation?"
Reddit/Adventurous-Weird-61"Give him an ultimatum so he has the chance to rehome them himself."
Reddit/AdmirableAvocado"It sounds like nobody in this house should own an animal."
Reddi/MidniteProph"Selling pets that are not yours is likely illegal."
Reddit/sci-fi-bi"He won't change his act just because his animals suffer."
Reddit/ShishbiWhat's your take on this situation? Do you think the OP is overreacting by making these threats, or is he entitled to feel the way he does about his brother's behavior?
Either way, it's clear that the real victims here are the cats! They deserve to be loved and taken care of by someone who wants what's best for them, and it appears that neither the OP nor his brother is that person.
Sadly, it seems that dad is the only one who genuinely cares about them. And we're pretty sure the cats would agree.
