Immature Boyfriend Picks A Fight With His Girlfriend Over Her Culture Just To Manipulate Her Into Having An Open Relationship

The culture he referred to was her practice of bringing gifts over to his parent's house during their weekly dinner

Realizing that the one you envisioned your future with is a lying, manipulative person must feel like a betrayal. In that case, ending the relationship is the only reasonable course of action.

But, the heart is not always reasonable. It took naturally suspicious Redditors for this 23-year-old to doubt her boyfriend's true intentions.

They have been together for four years and OP has gotten close with his parents during that time. They have been making it a point to see each other for dinner once a week to spend more time together.

OP makes sure that she doesn't come empty-handed to these dinners. She buys wines, flowers, or their favorite dessert & so far, they have been appreciative.

OP was raised by her immigrant parents to always bring something when she gets invited to someone else's home. Her BF knows this and hasn't complained once except for this fated night.

They were about to go to his parent's house when her BF saw OP's gift for the week. It was a vase of daffodils which his mother loves, but her BF got really upset for some reason.

He asked OP why she kept bringing things for his parents like they were a charity case. OP asked him what the problem was since she always does this even for his friends.

Further, OP said coming over with gifts for your host is a cultural thing which triggered her BF even more

He told her to stop imposing her culture on everyone

He thinks it's weird because OP is caucasian

OP handed him the flowers as an answer while she went for a walk and he left to go to his parents' house for dinner

When he got home, he returned the flowers to OP

He said his parents were annoyed for always giving them things like they couldn't take care of themselves. OP received a message from her BF's dad later that night telling her that she is no longer welcome to dinner.

Her BF wants her to apologize and is refusing to discuss anything more with OP until she does. But OP doesn't feel like she did anything wrong.

OP confronted her BF after posting on Reddit. She told him that she would come over to his parents house to apologize personally which freaked her BF out.

Others suspected that OP's heritage is playing a part in this if her BF's family are really that upset over OP's culture

Someone pointed out that the timing is too convenient. OP and her BF fight, then suddenly his parents have a problem with OP's little gifts?

One thing is for sure, OP's boyfriend is not being entirely truthful

OP posted an update after so many Redditors sent her thoughtful messages and left helpful comments

Her BF realized OP is not joking about going to his parents house, so he decided to be honest with her. He admitted that it was him who sent the message to OP using his dad's phone.

He said his parents started dropping hints about him getting married to OP. He realized he didn't want to be tied down and wanted to experience more things because OP stopped being fun.

He acted upset to make OP beg for his forgiveness and then he would stipulate that he will only forgive her if she's willing to have an open relationship

OP laughed at him after hearing that and packed her bags. She broke up with him officially a few days later and kept in touch with his parents. She promised to continue seeing them for dinners.

Since OP helpfully brought his parents up to speed, they must have realized how wonderful their son turned out to be. How OP's ex managed to convince himself that this immature strategy would work, we will never know.

At least we know for sure that OP dodged a giant bullet by breaking up with this person. She deserves so much better than to settle for a person who would treat a supposed loved one so terribly.
