“To have gone through everything she's been through and still be so affectionate with both people and other dogs is just amazing”
Bonnie has overcome a lot in her life, but you'd never guess it by looking at her. The blind husky has only recently overcome her fear of stairs, thanks to the assistance of her big brother.
Bonnie's mother, Victoria Pombeiro, stated that she had to work her way up to it. The basement of their house is split level, and she [Bonnie] only lived on the ground level for the first few weeks, making no effort to come up to the kitchen area.
Bonnie would make some attempt at her own speed, so Pombeiro won't force it. Wookie, her big brother, was right there to guide her.
She'd take a few steps, then lose confidence and fall back down. Then a friend visited Pombeiro, and they were having a chat in the kitchen, but something about the tone of her friend's voice made Bonnie run straight up to greet her.
It was such a proud moment for Bonnie, and a defining one at that! Bonnie, whom Pombeiro rescued from Rushton Dog Rescue in the United Kingdom, then had to climb stairs to return to the floor level—with a little help from her mother.
Pombeiro would sit on the top or bottom of the stairs and just speak to her, and Wookie would sometimes run up and down the stairs as if he was showing her what to do. It was absolutely adorable!
Bonnie is incredible; you'd never guess she's blind because she can map out a room, bump into things once, know where they are, and never bump through them again.
Bonnie uses the stairs frequently now that she has overcome her fear of them. But with Wookie by her side, it's even easier.
Bonnie's only hope is the bell they put on Wookie's collar to let her know where he is. She follows him around the house and sits next to him, almost on top of him.
Watch Bonnie walk down the stairs for the first time in this short clip:
Bonnie had already been through a lot by the time she arrived at her forever home: a hash nimal shelter in China, wounds, and a traumatic transport to England. Wookie, her best friend, now spends every day with her.
He was very supportive of her when she first showed up, as if he sensed she needed some moral support. Bonnie now has a second chance.
It's incredible that she's been through so much and still manages to be so affectionate with both people and other dogs. Bonnie's adoptive parents were concerned about adopting a blind dog, but she's proven that they don't have to be.
She’s just such an inspiration and her family is so proud of her. Let us know your thoughts about this inspirational and resilient dog in the comments section below.
