Dad jokes are a cultural phenomenon. Well, maybe not so much of a cultural, and perhaps not so much of a phenomenon, but they are funny.

The reason they are so funny is that they are so silly that it's impossible not to laugh at them, no matter how ridiculous or stupid they are. Most of them are based on puns and wordplay. They are so simple and so adorable.

All of us have been embarrassed by our dads' jokes at least once in our lifetime. There are three stages in our view of dad jokes.

Moonpig, an online card and gift retailer, has recently done a study to find the cringiest dad joke. It turns out that the all-time favorite dad joke is a classic – "What do you call a boomerang that doesn't come back? A stick."

According to the company's spokesperson, what makes dad jokes almost universally funny is the fact that "they are reminiscent of the embarrassment you would feel as a child from your parents, so a sense of nostalgia and innocence mixed with the humor gets us all laughing."
