People Are Posting Adorable Pics Of Their Newfoundlands And You Will Definitely Want One

Newfoundlands are renowned for their huge size and heavy coats, but as anyone who has ever owned one will tell you, there is much more to them than that.

These gentle giants are the fifth largest in the world. They stand at around 27-30 inches tall and can weigh as much as 150 pounds. They appear even larger because of their double-thick coat.

Newfoundlands come from the Canadian island of Newfoundland (as the name suggests). They were originally used by fishermen who needed dogs to help them. They were a natural choice due to their natural ability to swim well because of their webbed feet. These huge dogs were big enough to save a grown man from drowning, and it is their loyalty that makes them the ideal family dogs they have become today, as you will see below.

The Newfoundland's gentle nature has even earned them the nickname of the "nanny dog." They are fantastic with children, and it is reported that Senator Robert F. Kennedy and his wife had one as a "nanny dog" for their 11 children, similar to in the story of Peter Pan.

These huge dogs have a humongous lung capacity which helps them play for hours and they are guaranteed to still have plenty of energy left long after you've had enough. They also drool a lot, as this is how they keep cool with their double coat.

If you're planning on getting a Newfoundland, you will need to be prepared to buy lots and lots of dog food. Pups gain around 100 pounds in the first year of their life, so they eat A LOT!

They also need to be groomed regularly. Their coat requires regular brushing as it sheds frequently, and their nails need to be trimmed often to prevent their feet from splaying under their heavy weight.

However, although these dogs can be hard work, and should certainly be researched properly before you consider adopting one, they are most definitely wonderful additions to any family.

They are loyal, gentle and loving companions who will have you falling in love the moment you open your heart to one.
